Through our sister company, RAW Adventures, we offer a series of practical, inspiring winter mountain courses designed to help you gain the confidence and skills to travel safely in snowy and icy conditions. Whether you’re completely new to winter hiking or aiming to become a self-sufficient mountaineer, these small-group courses provide expert instruction in one of the UK’s most awe-inspiring mountain environments.

Based in the dramatic Scottish landscape, each course is taught by qualified Winter Mountain Leaders who are passionate about helping you develop both competence and confidence in the hills. Every group is kept small - typically 4 to 6 participants - to allow for plenty of personal coaching and support.

Introduction to Winter Mountain Skills

This two-day introductory course is the perfect entry point for anyone stepping into the world of winter mountain walking. You’ll learn how to move efficiently on snow and ice, use an ice axe and crampons, read snow conditions, and plan safe routes through winter terrain. It’s an empowering and enjoyable way to discover the wonder of the mountains in their most beautiful season.

Winter Munro Mountain Skills

Already comfortable walking in cold or snowy conditions? This advanced three-day course will take your mountaineering skills further. You’ll refine your use of winter equipment, master navigation and route planning, and build the confidence to tackle Scottish Munros independently. By the end of the course, you’ll be ready to explore the winter mountains safely on your own.

Introduction to Winter Climbing

If you’ve already enjoyed hillwalking or scrambling and want to progress to winter climbing, this hands-on course is ideal. Over several days, you’ll learn the techniques needed for secure movement on snowy and mixed terrain, including ice axe belays, crampon use, rope management, and simple snow anchors. It’s your next step toward more technical winter adventures.

Before your course begins, you’ll receive preparation guides, kit lists, and all the information you need. Equipment hire is available upon request for items you don’t yet own, and recommendations for accommodation in Aviemore, where the courses are based, are included.

Where are the courses held?

Our Winter Skills courses take place in the Cairngorms, starting each day from Aviemore, Scotland.

Is accommodation included?

Accommodation isn’t included, but we’ll provide recommended local options once you’ve booked your course.

Do I need special equipment?

We’ll send a full kit list when you book. If you’re missing any key items, we can help arrange hire for a small additional fee.

Are beginners welcome?

Yes! The Introduction to Winter Mountain Skills course is designed specifically for newcomers with no previous experience.

Can I spread the cost?

Yes, for any course over £200, instalment payments are available unless your start date is within two months.
